About us
The foundation of the museum work in Varna was laid in 1887. Then a group of teachers from the Varna Men’s High School under the leadership of K. Shkorpil and An. Yavashov created a team to collect archaeological materials from the city and its surroundings. On June 3, 1888, the Municipal Council decided to arrange a museum at the City Library. The collection was based on the materials already collected in the Men’s Gymnasium and the items found during the construction of the Razdelna-Devnia railway line. In 1892, the MNP ordered the funds of the museum collection to be sent to Sofia for the creation of a central museum. Despite the resistance of the Varna municipality in 1893, all materials were sent to Sofia. In 1894, K. Shkorpil returned as a teacher in the Varna Boys’ High School and took the initiative to organize a new museum collection. The following year (1895) it was moved to the building of the newly built Girls’ High School.
